April 30, 2008 - Crane Accident Kills Construction Worker
April 30, 2008 - A construction worker was killed when he was dismantling a crane 200 feet above an Annapolis shopping center Wednesday. Dennis Umanzor, 44, died after being pinned between two sections of the crane.
The accident occurred at about 9:15 a.m., and Umanzor was already dead when rescuers found him shortly thereafter, said Michael Cox, division chief for the Anne Arundel County fire department.
No other injuries were reported at the Annapolis Towne Center construction site, Cox said.
"The crane is in no danger of collapsing or anything like that," Cox said, although he admits that "we don't know exactly what happened."
"Apparently, they were in the process of dismantling the crane when something went wrong and one worker was caught between pieces and crushed," Cox said.
Umanzor’s body was removed shortly after 11 a.m.
