May 2, 2008 - Arkansas Storms Kill 6, Injure 13
Several storms that rolled across Arkansas early Friday left at least 6 people dead and 13 others injured, officials said Friday. One victim, a 15-year-old girl, was killed when a tree crashed through the bedroom where she was sleeping at her home in Siloam Springs.
Tornado warnings were issued for counties in central and north Arkansas. There were reports of a tornado touching down just after 8:30 a.m. near Damascus, Arkansas. "It sounded like all hell was breaking loose," said Randy Payne, a 38-year-old Damascus resident who hid in a hallway of his home during the storms.
Other storms late Thursday and early Friday damaged homes and businesses in and around Kansas City, Missouri. No serious injuries were reported in that area, but about 40,000 homes and businesses lost power during the storm Thursday. Officials say several people suffered only minor injuries.
Two other tornadoes were reported in Oklahoma late Thursday, although there were no reports of injuries or significant damage. In Canton, Texas, a tornado early Friday destroyed power lines and overturned vehicles, injuring two people.
