May 15, 2008 - L.A. Priest Child Molestation Case Settled
The Salesian Society reached a $19.5 million settlement with 17 child sexual abuse victims in the last of a string of unresolved cases stemming from the Los Angeles priest child molestation scandal.
The Salesians allegedly knew that the priest, Titian Miani, who is now 81, had been accused of abusing children when they placed him at a high school where he is claimed to have molested four children.
In the 1940s, Miani was accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy at a church retreat in Italy and of sexually abusing at least three other children at a Salesian boarding school in Edmonton, Canada, according to court documents.
The jury had already been selected for the trial that was to begin in Los Angeles Wednesday when the parties reached a settlement.
